What is Postpartum Depression (PPD)?

We specialize in therapy for postpartum depression in NYC.

Postpartum depression (PPD) is the depression that sometimes occurs after childbirth. New moms struggling with this may experience mood swings, feelings of depression, sadness, anxiety, emptiness, hopelessness, and persistent worry. While many women sometimes experience the so-called “baby blues,” postpartum depression is a disorder with symptoms that typically last longer and are persistent.

What does Postpartum depression (PPD) look like?

PPD can rob you of your energy and joy

With postpartum depression, some women report feeling disconnected or even angry with their new baby or their partner. New moms who are suffering from postpartum depression might feel guilty, worthless, and believe they are not being a good mother. Sometimes, they may regret not having energy or motivation and feel like they are struggling to keep up with all of the new demands placed on them.

For some mothers, symptoms may arrive right after childbirth and can last for up to a year post-delivery. While symptoms vary from person to person, below are some common symptoms that are frequently associated with PPD.

What you might be experiencing:
  • Persistent sadness, anxiety, or anger

  • Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, helplessness, hopelessness, or irritability

  • Difficulty concentrating or making decisions

  • Changes in appetite

  • Feeling tearful or crying more than usual

  • Constant doubts about your ability to be a mom or take care of your baby

  • Feeling disconnected or distant from your baby

  • Lack of energy or feeling easily fatigued

  • Isolating from friends and family

  • Thoughts about hurting yourself or your baby

  • Trouble sleeping or sleeping too much

How Therapy Can Help

There are a variety of different therapeutic approaches to treating Postpartum Depression

Postpartum depression is more common than typically thought, but there is help available to cope with the uncomfortable and sometimes painful feelings and thoughts that come with postpartum depression. At Clarity Therapy we specialize in the following types of therapy:

Insight-Oriented Therapy (Psychodynamic)
Insight-oriented therapy is based on the belief that through increased consciousness we can create new life experiences. This therapeutic process involves the therapist and client exploring and gaining a better understanding of how feelings, beliefs, actions, and events from the past may be influencing our current mindset and circumstances. The goal of insight-oriented therapy is to empower you with a sense of clarity so that you have the freedom to make new, adaptive, and healthier choices that support your continuing growth.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
This process is focused on addressing thought patterns, physical symptoms, and behaviors. Research shows that CBT is a very effective form of treating a variety of issues. Through compassionate and supportive care, we hope to create a safe space for you to feel comfortable in starting the process toward growth and reducing the feelings of depression and anxiety you may be feeling.

Mindfulness Practices
Through consistent practice, like meditation, we become more focused on the present and understand our experience in the here-and-now. Mindfulness teaches us to shift our attention away from negative thought patterns that lead to the unsatisfactory and problematic thoughts and behaviors and move toward positive and meaningful growth. Mindfulness can be used alone or combined with insight-oriented therapy and CBT.
