"Your past and your future are lenses through which you can discover a more meaningful present."

What holds you back? Do you find yourself feeling stuck, alone, or going through the motions of your day, wishing for more fulfillment? Feeling trapped by your thoughts? Discover the tools you need to succeed and honor your story. Your past and your future are lenses through which you can discover a more meaningful present. Healing can be challenging but you don’t have to go through it alone.

Meet Dr. Karen Kaur, Ph.D,
CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGIST

I am a licensed Clinical Psychologist in New York state who works with individuals and couples. I specialize in helping people with anxiety, depression, chronic stress, PTSD and complex trauma, relationship issues, and medical concerns including chronic illness. Through my fellowship training, I created a therapeutic approach that helps women and couples navigate pregnancy loss and miscarriage. As I continue my training in Reproductive Mental Health, I also treat concerns related to infertility, postpartum depression, and more.

I’m committed to the belief that learning is lifelong, and I use research to bolster my clinical care; my research experience includes heart rate variability biofeedback (HRVB) and motivational interviewing (MI). I am passionate about working with diverse groups, including people of color (BIPOC). I explore culture and diversity with intentionality and thoughtfulness, while exploring the nuances of how your identities, visible and hidden, impact you and your understanding of others in your lives.

I draw from Integrative, Cognitive-Behavioral (CBT), Psychodynamic, Emotions-Focused (EFT), Acceptance and Commitment (ACT), and Mindfulness (MBCT) based approaches.

Through my approach, you will be able to:

  • Work through current stressors and become attuned to your present needs
  • Reflect on past experiences and develop insight into how they have influenced you
  • Explore how societal and familial expectations may play a role in your life
  • Receive tangible skills to utilize in your day-to-day and facilitate relaxation
  • Work towards leading a goals-oriented and values-centric lifestyle
  • Develop an integrated sense of self

My wish is for you to develop a deep awareness and compassion for yourself, live deliberately, foster self-reliance, and find a true sense of peace and happiness. If you’d like to learn more about what it might look like for us to work together, you can book a complimentary phone consultation with me.

I also offer therapy in Punjabi.

MY THERAPY STYLE

Therapy is multifunctional and most effective when it is tailored to your needs and goals. Therapy can help you better understand yourself, your life, and what fulfills you. It can be a tool to address the blocks in your life, facilitate change, and foster a sense of true familiarity and intimacy with yourself, under the many layers, identities, and roles you take on. My therapeutic approach is deliberate, creative, and collaborative.

I am intentional and thoughtful in my attempt to understand those who are different from me. I am attuned to both visible and invisible differences. I lead with curiosity, respect, humility, and receptivity while building an understanding of others. I  create a safe and compassionate space where my clients feel heard and understood. I regularly invite feedback from my clients as well, as we honor and utilize our differences in navigating the therapeutic space.

Empathy comes from a true understanding of another being and appreciation for their strengths and struggles. Empathy involves momentarily forgoing your own experiences, goals, privileges, biases, and hopes in order to authentically connect to someone else’s perspective. Empathy is essential in building a strong therapeutic relationship and understanding of the person across the room.
